McKenzie Head

I assended a high Seperate bald hill Covered with long corse grass & Seperated from the hight of Country by a Slashey bottom 2 miles S. 60 W of the Cape—

This historic photo shows McKenzie Head—the hill they climbed to see the ocean—as viewed from Cape Disappointment. When the Columbia River North Jetty was built, this area filled in with sand. McKenzie Head still has long, coarse grass, but it is also covered with tall trees.
